Joy to the World! Receive His Everlasting Gift

Joy to the World! Receive His Everlasting Gift

Luke 2: 10-11(NIV)
“But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.”

I am sure you quite familiar with  the classic Christmas song, “Joy to the World,” but have you reflected lately on the meaning of the words we often sing so gleefully?

Joy to the world, the Lord is come.

The joy this song is referring to is the birth and second coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ!

This joy, is not just about being happy during a special celebration. This joy is an everlasting joy. This joy is a gift we receive, which then becomes part of our very being.

You see, Jesus is the joy we sing about so gleefully, and with good reason. There is none like Him!

Refresh yourself with the lyrics of this song again, and spend a moment reflecting on their meaning:

Joy to the world! the Lord is come;

Let earth receive her King;

Let every heart prepare him room,

And heaven and nature sing,

And heaven and nature sing,

And heaven, and heaven, and nature sing.

Joy to the world! the Saviour reigns;

Let men their songs employ;

While fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains

Repeat the sounding joy,

Repeat the sounding joy,

Repeat, repeat the sounding joy

He rules the world with truth and grace,
And makes the nations prove
The glories of His righteousness,
And wonders of His love,
And wonders of His love,
And wonders, wonders, of His love.

The Lord is come!  He came as a baby in a manger over 2000 years ago to bring joy to the world!  Let earth receive her King. Let every heart, prepare him room. The joy of the Lord is a gift to you and me, for now until eternity, not just a fleeting moment in time. In order to receive this gift of everlasting joy, we have to prepare our hearts as the song declares, to make room for Jesus to enter in.  We are also to sing praises to our King for who He is, and as we do, we are filled with the joy of the Lord!

If we read on further into Luke chapter two, we find in verses 13-14 that even the angels came to sing praises as they witnessed the birth of our Savior. “Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, ‘Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.’ ”

All of heaven and earth declare the wonders of His love. All we have to do is look around to take in the awesome beauty of His creation, and we see the wonders of His love in countless places.

We can find similar lyrics to this Christmas carol as we read Psalm 98: 4-9

Shout to the Lord, all the earth;

break out in praise and sing for joy!

Sing your praise to the Lord with the harp,

with the harp and melodious song,

with trumpets and the sound of the ram’s horn.

Make a joyful symphony before the Lord, the King!

Let the sea and everything in it shout his praise!

Let the earth and all living things join in.

Let the rivers clap their hands in glee!

Let the hills sing out their songs of joy

before the Lord,

for he is coming to judge the earth.

He will judge the world with justice,

and the nations with fairness.
If you are seeking greater joy in life, it truly doesn’t get more simple to find it. There is no greater or lasting joy, than in Jesus Christ Himself.  All you have to do is accept Him into your heart, and make room for Him.

If you have allowed life to become more complicated than you care for, choose to simplify today by receiving the joy of the Lord. Choose to place your focus solely on following Jesus Christ. Choose to sing praises to the King who is worthy of all praise. Choose to trust in Him, who will never lead you astray or leave you. Choose to put your hope in the One who offers you eternal life in Him.

Choose everlasting JOY!  It is God’s gift to the world. Have you received it?

This year, as you sing this Christmas carol, sing it with all your heart as if you were singing to Jesus Himself.  Afterall, He is the joy  you are singing about. It is a promise from God, that as your heart aligns with His, He will fill you with all joy.

So lighten up this Christmas season, and receive or re-open the gift of everlasting joy in your heart. This is a gift that will truly keep on giving.

And you’re welcome for the Christmas carol that is now in your head. Tis the season!

Let’s pray:
Father God I thank you for this indescribable gift you have given to me; that of the joy of the Lord. Forgive me for the times I have forgotten this precious gift, and allowed the stressors of this world to rob me of my joy. Let the words from the carol, Joy to the World, settle deep into my heart and let them play over and over in my mind so they drown out the stressors of this world.  Lord I know your joy is everlasting and isn’t dependent on how I feel, or whether life is going my way. Your joy sustains me in all things and keeps my burdens light. Help me God to receive this beautiful gift in my heart, and then let it shine brightly through me for others to see in all that I do and say.  May I be filled with joy simply by speaking your sweet name, Jesus.  Amen.
