Mighty Faith Calls Forth Mighty Courage

Psalm 108: 1-5.
God has so many rich blessings for us as His beloved children, so much goodness He desires for us to walk in. But every blessing is conditional. Faith along with obedience is required of us to receive those blessings. To be clear- God’s love is unconditional-there is nothing we can do to change His absolute and complete love for us. There is
much we can do however to receive or cast away His blessings upon our lives.

As we shared last week, God has promised us a good land, flowing with milk and honey; in fact, He said I have given it to you. But as we mentioned last week and as we’ll see in the weeks ahead, not all will enter that promised land, and not all will truly settle in and receive every blessing there is within the promised land. God desires for us to enjoy all His blessings for they are so wonderful. He doesn’t want us to leave one sitting unopened because He has already given them to us but we need to take hold of them.

To do this, there are some requirements of us: God requires us to have faith in who He is, the True Living God, all-powerful, Creator of all the Universe, Lord over all. Maybe you’re thinking great-easy! I believe God is truly God!

There is another requirement: He requires us to have faith in what He says- to believe in His Word and live by His Word. Faith and obedience open the door to the blessings of heaven falling upon us.

Maybe you’re feeling less confident now-you believe in God, but you’re not so strong in believing in His ways-at least not always when life gets really hard, or maybe you’re not so obedient when it comes to following His ways… Well, you’re in good company friend. Be encouraged today because God knows our frail state and there is good

Jesus said, in Matthew 17: 20-21 Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” God knows that most of us will begin with a small amount of faith that is flickering but not really fanned into a flame yet. He also knows when really hard or tragic events happen it can cause our faith to shrink…He knows this about us as His creation. His encouragement is it’s ok if your faith is small right now because My power is mighty.

Keep believing in Me, keep following where I lead you and through My faithfulness to you, your faith will grow stronger. Remember it is faith in My Son and all He is, and all He will do through your life as you trust in Him. He has a plan and a proven way that builds our faith in Him and increases our courage to live free in Christ.

God is so good to show us all He has for us, (the promised land of blessing, prosperity, and peace) then He sends us encouragement and affirmation of His promises of provision for us, so our faith builds and as faith builds our courage rises within us to do the things He is asking us to do for His glory. As we do them, He works all things out according to His divine purpose and to our great blessing. Through it all, He takes our little faith and builds upon it, and then as only He can do, He multiplies it and causes others to share in our faith. It’s really quite awesome how He weaves everything together!

He’s looking for a willing people who learn to live courageously, not through their own power or wisdom, but
through His divine provision; they learn to take bold steps of faith, because that is the only way we will truly
experience the riches of His blessings, which is freedom from all the weights and pulls of this world.
Notice I said people who learn to…. This is a journey for all of us and the great encouragement is God kindly grafts
us into the church so we don’t have to make this journey alone, so that we can learn together and when one of us is
weak in our faith, we can rely on the strength of others’ faith to keep us going.
Will you be that willing person? Will you seek God and invite Him to build your faith more and more so you
might live courageously through His provision and grace upon your life?
This is what God did with the people of Israel. He told them in advance of the promises He had for them, of the
victory He was giving them and the wonderful blessings they would enjoy. He prepared their hearts so they would
learn to trust in Him and He used the mighty strength of two men to build the faith and courage of the whole
people. Through their example we will see how mighty faith calls forth mighty courage. Mighty courage is
what positions us to act and take hold of the promised land.

Joshua 2: 1-4, 8-12 NIV

Then Joshua son of Nun secretly sent two spies from Shittim. “Go, look over the land,” he said, “especially
Jericho.” So they went and entered the house of a prostitute named Rahab and stayed there. 2  The king of Jericho
was told, “Look, some of the Israelites have come here tonight to spy out the land.”  3  So the king of Jericho sent this
message to Rahab: “Bring out the men who came to you and entered your house, because they have come to spy
out the whole land.” 4  But the woman had taken the two men and hidden them. She said, “Yes, the men came to me,

but I did not know where they had come from.

8  Before the spies lay down for the night, she went up on the roof  9  and said to them, “I know that the LORD has given
you this land and that a great fear of you has fallen on us, so that all who live in this country are melting in fear
because of you.  10  We have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red Sea for you when you came out of
Egypt, and what you did to Sihon and Og, the two kings of the Amorites east of the Jordan, whom you completely
destroyed.  11  When we heard of it, our hearts melted in fear and everyone’s courage failed because of you, for
the LORD your God is God in heaven above and on the earth below. 12  “Now then, please swear to me by
the LORD that you will show kindness to my family, because I have shown kindness to you. Give me a sure sign
1. Look Over the Land.
Joshua 2:1 “Go, look over the land,” he said, “especially Jericho.”
As the leader of Israel’s army, Joshua wisely sent a couple men ahead to look over the land-to take in what they are
up against, see what obstacles they would incur, notice who their enemy was, especially Jericho. Why Jericho…it’s
where the king resided and it’s where God would supernaturally defeat their enemy by having the walls come
crumbling down. They had to notice how secure it seemed-sturdy walls and gates in place to keep people out. God
wanted them to see that so when He would later call those walls to crumble, it would be all the more reason to
praise and trust in God.
But God also wanted them to see, as did Joshua, the good land that God had spoken of for so many years. Go see
for your own eyes. Take it all in. See the goodness flowing within it and remember My Words, “I have given you
this land.”

As they looked upon the land, they were about to take hold of, they would remember God’s words and vivid
description spoken to their people through Moses. These words of truth and promise would come flooding back as
they surveyed the land.
Deuteronomy 8:7-9 7  For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land—a land with brooks, streams, and
deep springs gushing out into the valleys and hills;  8  a land with wheat and barley, vines and fig
trees, pomegranates, olive oil and honey;  9  a land where bread will not be scarce and you will lack nothing; a land
where the rocks are iron and you can dig copper out of the hills.
The prophet Jeremiah later spoke of this too reminding the people of Israel who were wayward once again, what
God had spoken to their ancestors as He miraculously rescued them out of Egypt.
Jeremiah 7:23 7  For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land—a land with brooks, streams, and deep
springs gushing out into the valleys and hills;  8  a land with wheat and barley, vines and fig trees, pomegranates,
olive oil and honey;  9  a land where bread will not be scarce and you will lack nothing; a land where the rocks are
iron and you can dig copper out of the hills.
This is still true for us today. Remember the kingdom of God is not one physical place, but it is among and within
Luke 17:21 Jesus replied, “The coming of the kingdom of God is not something that can be observed,  21  nor will
people say, ‘Here it is,’ or ‘There it is,’ because the kingdom of God is in your midst.
So that means the riches of His blessing is found within. It is not found in this physical world around us because
this is a broken, flawed world we are living in. We can enjoy His abounding blessings while living in this broken
world however. We can take hold of His peace, His joy, His comfort, His strength, His wisdom, His favor, and
generosity…while we are still leaving here. We don’t have to wait for heaven to realize these blessings. So let us
look over the land-let us look over His Word and see the goodness He has for us. Let us believe for it and then…
Let us step out in obedience and do what He asks us to do to attain it. The two men had to go and survey the
land to actually see the goodness right? They couldn’t see it from the camp they were in-not fully. They would have
also missed the awesome words of affirmation God shared with them through Rahab if they never left the camp.
They had to go forward in obedience to hear the powerful confession through Rahab.
2. Affirming Prophecy to Build Courage.
This is how God works-we’ll see it repeatedly in the Bible and if you are paying attention, you’ll see it in your life
too. God will give a promise, followed with a vivid vision and description for you to hold on to, and as you begin to
act by faith taking initial steps of obedience, He will send words of affirmation and encouragement through various
sources to build your faith even more, and increase your courage to keep going so you attain the fulness of blessing
He has for you.
Look at what God said to the people of Israel while Moses was still their leader.
Deuteronomy 2:25 NIV This very day I will begin to put the terror and fear of you on all the nations under
heaven. They will hear reports of you and will tremble and be in anguish because of you.”
Deuteronomy 11:25 NIV No one will be able to stand against you. The LORD your God, as he promised you, will
put the terror and fear of you on the whole land, wherever you go.
Notice Rahab’s words as she made her confession to the men.
Joshua 2:11 NIV 11  When we heard of it, our hearts melted in fear and everyone’s courage failed because of
you, for the LORD your God is God in heaven above and on the earth below.

Exactly as God said it would be. Can you see how important it is to pay attention to what God is showing you and
speaking to you? Pay attention to the exact words He says both in written form and in prophetic words spoken to
you. Can you see how important it is to take steps of faith, even if they are small steps initially, to set in motion the
fruition of this promise of victory God has for you? We must step out and act. We can’t stay where we are and
enter the promised land. We have to get up and move. As we move, God shows up to encourage and strengthen us,
so our courage might grow as we continue forward.
Look at how the two men responded to Rahab’s confession.
Joshua 2:24 NIV They said to Joshua, “The LORD has surely given the whole land into our hands; all the people
are melting in fear because of us.”
This was before any battle took place on the other side of the Jordan. Those battles were yet to commence-this was
just in the preparation stage and yet they were speaking as it being a done deal. They had absolute confidence in
their victory. Their courage and confidence was felt by all the people. Their faith helped build the faith of others.
How important was this mission and preparation step to their success?
Can you see why God prepares you before you enter battle? His promise is there, but we can’t jump right into
battle. He prepares us and then encourages our heart and strengthens our faith because He knows we’ll need it.
When we enter battles from a place of victory, it is so powerful. We invite God to do what only He can do-to
show up and display His mighty power and to show the riches of His grace to His chosen ones. Because we are not
relying on our power or strategies to defeat the enemy-we are relying solely on the promise of God to fight for us
and to bring us to victory. We don’t need to know how He will do that-we simply trust He will because He said He
The men were on a mission to gather intel for the Israel army. The awesome thing about God is, His plans are
always bigger and far higher than our plans. He has so much more in store then what we can even comprehend
when we are acting in faithful obedience to Him. While the men were scoping out the land, God was working in the
heart of one woman, who was not destined for much in this life, but one whose entire destiny would be changed.
The more courageously we stand in our faith, the more God will multiply it and spread it.
3. Faith Multiplies.
Joshua 2:11 NIV 11  When we heard of it, our hearts melted in fear and everyone’s courage failed because of
you, for the LORD your God is God in heaven above and on the earth below.
Rahab had a confession of faith in who God was and is. She believed based on what she heard. Because she
believed, God had mercy on her and rewrote her destiny. This is His heart for all people. She asked for kindness
from Israel as they came through, so they pledged an oath to each other. She had to make sure all her family was in
her house when the battle commenced, and to hang a scarlet rope from her window as a sign for them to pass by.
They would spare all who were in her home and keep them safe. She in turn would not tell her people who they
were or what was coming.
Let’s look ahead briefly to what came of this battle because it is powerful what God did for her and her family.
Joshua 6:25 NIV But Joshua spared Rahab the prostitute, with her family and all who belonged to her, because she
hid the men Joshua had sent as spies to Jericho—and she lives among the Israelites to this day.
Rahab became part of a new group of people; she had a new life and a new identity. Her old way of living was left
in the past-buried in the rubble left in that town, and she had a Living God to believe in and live for. She had a new
destiny and would be forever remembered-no longer the prostitute- now the mother of Boaz who was the
grandfather of Jesse.
Matthew 1:5 NIV Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab, Boaz the father of Obed, whose mother
was Ruth, Obed the father of Jesse,

Jesse was the father of King David and it was through King David the promise that someone from his line would
always sit on the throne and that promised was fulfilled through Jesus. Now that is awesome. That is the beauty of
faith; when we apply it and express it, God multiplies it and others are able to share in the blessings found in
the promised land. And we have no idea the greatness that will come through another person’s act of faith so it is
not for us to determine who will receive or not. It is simply up to us to model and share faith.
If those men never went to look over the land, they would have never encountered Rahab, they never would have
heard her confession and they never would have given her the opportunity to be spared and redeemed. Their steps
of faithful obedience created a ripple effect of building mighty faith and mighty courage for many.
Conclusion: Courage rises as our faith builds. Faith grows through increasing obedience. Let us look over the land
and see it is good. Let us courageously obey all God asks us to do, believing His Words of victory for us. Let our
mighty faith and courage send a ripple effect of growing faith to those around us.
