The Outpouring of the Holy Spirit

John 16: 7-13

7ย โ€œBut very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocateย will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.ย 8ย When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment:ย 9ย about sin, because people do not believe in me;ย 10ย about righteousness,ย because I am going to the Father,ย where you can see me no longer;ย 11ย and about judgment, because the prince of this worldย now stands condemned. 12ย โ€œI have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear.ย 13ย But when he, the Spirit of truth,ย comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.โ€

Acts 2: 1-21

1 When the day of Pentecostย came, they were all togetherย in one place.ย 2ย Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.ย 3ย They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.ย 4ย All of them were filled with the Holy Spiritย and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

5ย Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearingย Jews from every nation under heaven.ย 6ย When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken.ย 7ย Utterly amazed,ย they asked: โ€œArenโ€™t all these who are speaking Galileans?ย 8ย Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language?ย 9ย Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia,ย Pontusย and Asia,ย 10ย Phrygiaย and Pamphylia,ย Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene;ย visitors from Romeย 11ย (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabsโ€”we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!โ€ย 12ย Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, โ€œWhat does this mean?โ€

13ย Some, however, made fun of them and said, โ€œThey have had too much wine.โ€ 14ย Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: โ€œFellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say.ย 15ย These people are not drunk, as you suppose. Itโ€™s only nine in the morning!ย 16ย No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:

17ย โ€œโ€˜In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. 18ย Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy. 19ย I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke. 20ย The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord. 21ย And everyone who calls on the name of the Lordย will be saved.โ€™

John 13:35, โ€œBy this everyone will know that you are my disciples if you love one another.โ€

John 17: 22-23

22ย I have given them the glory that you gave me,ย that they may be one as we are oneโ€”ย 23ย I in them and you in meโ€”so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved themย even as you have loved me.

Ephesians 3: 16-19

16ย I pray that out of his glorious richesย he may strengthen you with powerย through his Spirit in your inner being,ย 17ย so that Christ may dwell in your heartsย through faith. And I pray that you, being rootedย and established in love,ย 18ย may have power, together with all the Lordโ€™s holy people,ย to grasp how wide and long and high and deepย is the love of Christ,ย 19ย and to know this love that surpasses knowledgeโ€”that you may be filledย to the measure of all the fullness of God.
